Useless Headcanon Pertaining to Non-Humans and Monsters
Because I have too much spare time!

A monster is a creature with animal-level intelligence. Monsters are incapable of speech, complex thought, and cannot be reasoned with. This doesn’t mean they’re inherently bad, just that these are the terms that her universe’s Earth uses for them.

A non-human is a sentient being of human level intelligence. They are capable of speech, albeit not always English, and have been recorded having conversations with humans at least once in history. This does not mean they are good – they can be all over the spectrum of morality despite having intelligence.

Creatures in Sabryn’s world include, on the North American continent, but are not remotely limited to:

Ani’si: Monsters that appear as normal pets of any kind, albeit with unusually yellow coloring. They are friendly enough, but crossing their humans will result in sudden death, with autopsies revealing bright yellow insides of their victims. Yellow ‘dye’ comes off them in waves when they are bathed.

Chupacabras: The monster that Sabryn has the most experience with. Six feet tall, with yellow or green skin that can darken at night and eyes like embers, these monsters have thick claws. Some are winged, some are not. They have been making their way northward for quite a while, and are becoming one of the hardest things to cover up for the US government due to their tendency to go after children and livestock.

Deer Women: Mostly benign non-human shapeshifters who are an all female species, deer women will on occasion have conflicts with humans who move into their territory. Things will begin to go wrong on-site at mines, oil rigs and housing projects, with deer and young and old women spotted without cause in the vicinity. In the wild, however, they are content to leave campers alone. Somehow, they breed with male non-paranormal stags to create the next generation of deer women. If recognized for what they are, they run away.

Elves: Dark browns and deep tans of skin, light silvers and golds of hair, and with color-shifting eyes, they live… somewhere. No one quite knows where. Sabryn has encountered them while fighting chupacabra; elves are very concerned with the balance of things. They have distinct tribes and traditions, and hide from humanity out of the belief humans are not ready for the knowledge other species exist. Their powers include amazing aim and eyesight, excellent agility and in some individuals minor healing abilities.

Fur Bearing Trout: Exactly what it says. A ‘monster’ that yes, the government still tries to hide, but is basically the Not Secret of America. More friendly than most fish.

Hattak-Taloa: Non-human men that appear from nowhere who everyone instantly accepts has always been part of their family, though those outside the bloodline will not be fooled. They sing with enchanting voices that induce soothing effects in all who hear it, and reside with a human family until able to marry. At some point within their marriage, during a solstice, they will lash out and kill their spouse and children, drinking some of their blood or taking body parts. This keeps their appearance handsome and desirable, and changes it so that when they flee the scene, they can repeat the process.

Hell hounds: Monstrous giant black dogs with sometimes glowing eyes who will kill you instantly if you look at them three times. For this reason, very little is known about them.

Ieeiqun: Dwelling in Alaska and Canada, these non-humans are the most human looking of all non-humans that aren’t shapeshifters. If viewed from a distance their features become indistinguishable, likely as a protective defense, but if viewed up close there are many things off about them. Their eyes are totally black with no white, their noses are unnaturally thin, they have inhumanly long hair that trails behind them and blows in the wind, but is too heavy to lift when touched, they have most of their height in their legs, and possess six fingers. Capable of seeing in the dark, tearing a caribou apart with their bare hands and speaking any language, they are violently allergic to salt and heat, and can die if exposed to these elements.

Itekagapi: Humanoid non-humans with masks over their faces that hide two sets of blazing amber eyes and two rows of sharp teeth, as well as a lack of a nose. These people move very quickly and speak rapidly in low, gravely voices. The male to female ratio is around 12 to 1. In darkness, they are able to move even faster, giving rise to the idea they teleport. Average height is around 6 to 7 feet. Fires tend to start rapidly in their presence when angered, but water and especially rain will weaken them.

Jackalopes: Adorable monstrous rabbits with deer horns. They roam the entire country, yet are thought of as simply a joke by most people. They can breed with normal rabbits and are generally much smarter than the average rabbit is.

Kinepik: Monsters that are, to be blunt, giant snakes capable of burrowing and moving under the ground. They also manage to swim silently and can hold their breath, allowing them to swim underwater. They feed on small dogs, children and, when they get bigger, grown adults. They are repelled by the color red and moonlight.

Otahkoinawa: Yellowbirds of tremendous size, silent as owls, who heal humans or strike them deadly ill if they begin to follow a human. This usually occurs in wooded areas, and the healing or illness is given in accordance with the human’s moral actions, making the intelligence of these birds in dispute.

Qomvileetayo: Black foxes native to New Mexico and Mexico itself, these creatures straddle the line between monster and non-human, as their intelligence is hard to gauge. Bad luck follows whoever they meet, but they strike indiscriminately. In addition, they have often been spotted inside houses of newborn babies, where they cause SIDS before departing. They do not show up on cameras but will instead appear as baby fox pups of a normal color. On many occasions they will leave messages in the dirt behind houses where they have struck.

Qalupalik: Green skinned women that live in the ocean and in some rivers, who steal human children and replace them with halfbreed children. They instill the ability to live underwater in the human children they steal, and keep them as servants or pets. They have a distinctive humming sound used as a language, making them non-humans, not monsters. Some of them adopt human children as their own; they despise halfbreeds or people of any mixed heritage and will attack them savagely.

Tornrait: Spirits that possess brain dead humans and leave the human’s family, taking up new lives and new names. They are often the spirits of animals, resulting in predatory personalities, but are loyal to their family and friends to a fault. Constant travelers, their true danger is a volatile temper during moonless nights that can leave people dead in their wake.

Vampires: The standard non-sparkling, sunlight-is-death vampire. I don’t think this needs further elaboration.

Wendigos: Non-humans who used to be human until they consumed human flesh. They are now doomed to walk the Earth never satisfied, always growing thinner, emaciated beyond the point a human being could live, craving human flesh. That said, they do possess memories and language skills from when they were human, and can be bargained with via food.
